In heath care today, we tend to want to break down care into parts and every kind of specialist under the sun. Realistically, patients many times have complex issues that involve the body as a whole, not just a broken part. So, it makes sense to me to have a group of experts in their field working together to address as many of the underlying causes to your problem as possible.

I believe giving the patient the best possible care with the best results and doing this all within one convenient location is truly integrated care. We strive for this model of care in our clinic at Affinity Medical Group with the use of medical, chiropractic, acupuncture, physical rehabilitation, massage, and nutrition. I foresee health care moving toward this model in the future if we are to give patients what they want and need.

That’s a very good question. The first thing we need to do is figure out what is causing your symptoms. Carpal tunnel syndrome results from pressure on the median nerve that runs through the carpal tunnel of the wrist. If the medial nerve is compressed or irritated it can cause numbness, tingling, or weakness. Symptoms typically arise from repetitive activities such as typing, assembly line work, using certain hand tools, or playing sports like racquetball, etc. Swelling around the median nerve can bring about symptoms as well. If this doesn’t sound like the cause of your symptoms or you feel like the pain and numbness is coming from elsewhere, we need to look for another cause.

Many people can have nerve irritation from arthritis or degenerative discs in their neck that can compress spinal nerves as they exit the spinal cord in that area. Pain and numbness can travel all the way from the neck into the hand and fingers in this situation. Tight muscles in the shoulder or forearm can also cause carpal tunnel-like symptoms when the median nerve is compressed. If the main cause of your symptoms stems from your neck or forearm, getting carpal tunnel surgery will likely not provide long-term relief of your discomfort. Chiropractic care is a great conservative option for treating spinal and shoulder conditions that may be the real cause of your carpal tunnel symptoms before you go under the knife.

Because life happens, that’s why. From the very beginning in the womb, babies can find themselves in less than ideal positions that put stress and strain on a developing musculoskeletal system. Add to that birth trauma and the pulling, twisting, and turning that some babies endure as doctors assist in the birth process and I wonder why more parents don’t at the very least get their children evaluated for any issues that may arise from this process. Children are amazing little human beings that are constantly developing and changing. They typically don’t have all of the common problems of adults like arthritis, old injuries, bad posture and habits, and illnesses but they can have little bumps along the road to adulthood that can set them back. It’s almost ridiculous to see how quickly a child will respond to chiropractic care when they do have a small health challenge because they don’t have all of the complicating factors that adults have accumulated.

Chiropractic care is truly preventative health care in children by helping their bodies’ function as close to their human potential as possible while identifying and treating small problems early before they develop in to larger ones as the child ages. Do you and your child a favor and get them an evaluation to see how chiropractic can help them stay active and healthy during the best years of their life… just being a kid.

Diet soda is good because it has no calories, right? Many people feel that because there are no calories in diet soda, they can drink all they want and it doesn’t affect their diet. In truth, diet sodas may be just as bad for you, if not worse than regular soda. Many of us crave sugar. If diet sodas are tricking our taste buds into thinking that we are drinking something sweet, but we don’t get a rise in out blood glucose levels, we can crave more sweets. This can cause us to eat more sugary foods and snacks as a result. New studies are also linking diet sodas to an increased risk of stroke and heart attacks. Many people who drink diet sodas also have sensitivity to aspartame, which can cause a slew of side effects including headaches, nausea, and fatigue.

I don’t know about you, but the negative aspects of consuming diet sodas seems to outweigh the small amount of pleasure you receive from drinking them. If you are concerned enough about your diet to drink something with zero calories, I suggest doing was is best for you and drinking a large glass of water instead.

In a recent study published in the Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics, October 2010, Volume 33, Issue 8, research had concluded that spinal manipulation had the same effectiveness as microdiscectomy for patients that struggle with sciatica secondary to lumbar disc herniation.

Considering the risks and costs associated with spinal surgery, chiropractic seems to make sense as the first option for care in many cases of disc degeneration with sciatica symptoms. About 200,000 such surgeries happen in the U.S. each year at an average cost of $25,000. That’s $5 billion each year! Even if a chiropractic patient received 30 treatments in a year at $100 per visit, that would only cost $600 million vs. $5 billion at a savings of $4.4 billion per year. This is only ONE study. Want to help solve America’s health care crisis? Looks like chiropractic care is a step in the right direction in keeping people healthier and more active while keeping our costs down.

That is a great question I bet most of us have never thought about or have no idea where it comes from. In today’s society, fast, easy, and cheap is what works for our busy schedules. If we really knew what we were eating in our food though, I think we would make more of an effort to take the time to prepare fresh, wholesome meals, preferably from local organic sources. Just because the FDA approves certain methods of food processing doesn’t necessarily mean that it is healthy. More likely it just means that it probably won’t kill you or the majority of the population. Sounds quite appetizing, huh? I would encourage everyone to take a closer look at their eating habits and diet and make changes where possible to eat less processed foods. Local organic products are also a great way to eat healthier and support farmers and businesses in your area.

I have been using low-level laser or cold laser therapy in my practice for over 7 years, although laser therapy has been used for over 30 years. Most patients or the public have never heard of it and have lots of questions as you can imagine. First of all, laser is just a fancy word to describe light that does not spread out when it shines. It stays in a nice tight beam. Low-level laser does not cut or burn tissue like some high-powered surgical lasers. These therapeutic lasers have no known side effects and have very few contraindications for use.

Just like when our bodies convert sunlight and the sun’s energy into making Vitamin D, cold laser stimulates ATP production, which is the energy that cells run on. This increased energy or metabolism allows cells to bring in nutrients and dispose of waste products more efficiently. The result is faster healing and decreased pain and inflammation. Many acute injuries and chronic pain conditions can be treated safely and effectively with low-level laser therapy.

One of the hot topics right now in nutrition seems to be Vitamin D intake. There are more studies coming out every week about the benefit of increasing our amount of Vitamin D. Even the recommendations for RDA of Vitamin have changed. The old RDA for Vitamin D was set at 400 units. The new recommendation is now 600 units. This is still a far cry from the 2000-4000 units I recommend to many of my patients. Vitamin D plays a very important role in the human body. Most of what we get is from our body converting sunlight energy into the process that makes Vitamin D. In Minnesota and many other parts of the world, we do not get enough sunlight to sustain proper levels in our bodies.

Vitamin D plays a very important role in calcium absorption to maintain strong healthy bones and promotes a healthy immune system for fighting off illnesses. There is also research that points to Vitamin D’s importance in preventing certain types of cancers like colon and breast cancer. Vitamin D makes my list of one of the top 5 vitamins that everyone should consider taking.

The one thing I recommend to all of my patients regardless of age or health status is to take a high quality multi-vitamin. There are thousands of choices out there, so I advise asking a trusted healthcare professional what pharmaceutical grade highly absorbable multi-vitamin they take and would give to their own family.

With our American style diet, we do not get enough quality nutrients for our bodies to function properly. Even those people who eat well with organic foods and well-rounded diets may not be getting enough nutrients due to our current soils, cooking, and food processing techniques. As we age, our digestive systems also tend to have difficulty breaking down nutrients from foods or low-quality supplements.

Eating well is by far the best way to give your body what it needs, but most of us have a hard time accomplishing this goal. Taking a high quality multi-vitamin can act as an insurance policy for those nutrients that our body is lacking from our normal everyday diet.

I can’t stress enough the importance of water to the human body. Our body weight is made up of about 60% water. In the chiropractic and healthcare realm, some of the more important functions of water in the body are as follows:

Dissolves minerals and nutrients and makes them accessible to your body for use.

Helps carry nutrients and oxygen to the cells in your body.

Flushes out waste products and toxins that can build up in tissues.

Lubricates joints such as knees, vertebral discs, shoulder, and hips.

Regulates body temperature

The standard recommendation for water intake per day is about 2 liters or 8 glasses of fluid. Water intake can vary depending on your health challenges or activity level. Water can come from a multitude of beverages, but the best source is good old-fashioned H2O. Get yourself a large stainless steel water bottle and carry it with you everywhere. You’ll thank yourself later.
