New Hope, MN Chiropractor “Slams” Diet Soda

Diet soda is good because it has no calories, right?  Many people feel that because there are no calories in diet soda, they can drink all they want and it doesn’t affect their diet.  In truth, diet sodas may be just as bad for you, if not worse than regular soda.  Many of us crave sugar.  If diet sodas are tricking our taste buds into thinking that we are drinking something sweet, but we don’t get a rise in out blood glucose levels, we can crave more sweets.  This can cause us to eat more sugary foods and snacks as a result.  New studies are also linking diet sodas to an increased risk of stroke and heart attacks.  Many people who drink diet sodas also have sensitivity to aspartame, which can cause a slew of side effects including headaches, nausea, and fatigue.

I don’t know about you, but the negative aspects of consuming diet sodas seems to outweigh the small amount of pleasure you receive from drinking them.  If you are concerned enough about your diet to drink something with zero calories, I suggest doing was is best for you and drinking a large glass of water instead.

New Hope, MN Chiropractor Asks – Where Does Our Food Come From?

That is a great question I bet most of us have never thought about or have no idea where it comes from.  In today’s society, fast, easy, and cheap is what works for our busy schedules.  If we really knew what we were eating in our food though, I think we would make more of an effort to take the time to prepare fresh, wholesome meals, preferably from local organic sources.  Just because the FDA approves certain methods of food processing doesn’t necessarily mean that it is healthy.  More likely it just means that it probably won’t kill you or the majority of the population.  Sounds quite appetizing, huh?  I would encourage everyone to take a closer look at their eating habits and diet and make changes where possible to eat less processed foods.  Local organic products are also a great way to eat healthier and support farmers and businesses in your area.

New Hope, MN Chiropractor Sheds Light On Vitamin D

One of the hot topics right now in nutrition seems to be Vitamin D intake.  There are more studies coming out every week about the benefit of increasing our amount of Vitamin D.  Even the recommendations for RDA of Vitamin have changed.  The old RDA for Vitamin D was set at 400 units.  The new recommendation is now 600 units.  This is still a far cry from the 2000-4000 units I recommend to many of my patients.  Vitamin D plays a very important role in the human body.  Most of what we get is from our body converting sunlight energy into the process that makes Vitamin D.  In Minnesota and many other parts of the world, we do not get enough sunlight to sustain proper levels in our bodies.

Vitamin D plays a very important role in calcium absorption to maintain strong healthy bones and promotes a healthy immune system for fighting off illnesses.  There is also research that points to Vitamin D’s importance in preventing certain types of cancers like colon and breast cancer.  Vitamin D makes my list of one of the top 5 vitamins that everyone should consider taking.

One A Day Keeps The Doctor Away – Multivitamins

The one thing I recommend to all of my patients regardless of age or health status is to take a high quality multi-vitamin.  There are thousands of choices out there, so I advise asking a trusted healthcare professional what pharmaceutical grade highly absorbable multi-vitamin they take and would give to their own family.

With our American style diet, we do not get enough quality nutrients for our bodies to function properly.  Even those people who eat well with organic foods and well-rounded diets may not be getting enough nutrients due to our current soils, cooking, and food processing techniques.  As we age, our digestive systems also tend to have difficulty breaking down nutrients from foods or low-quality supplements.

Eating well is by far the best way to give your body what it needs, but most of us have a hard time accomplishing this goal.  Taking a high quality multi-vitamin can act as an insurance policy for those nutrients that our body is lacking from our normal everyday diet.

Chiropractor New Hope, MN Stresses Importance of H2O

Filed under: Chiropractic,Health Tips,Natural Remedies,Nutrition — Tags: , , — thedoc @ 11:12 pm

I can’t stress enough the importance of water to the human body.  Our body weight is made up of about 60% water.  In the chiropractic and healthcare realm, some of the more important functions of water in the body are as follows:

  1. Dissolves minerals and nutrients and makes them accessible to your body for use.
  2. Helps carry nutrients and oxygen to the cells in your body.
  3. Flushes out waste products and toxins that can build up in tissues.
  4. Lubricates joints such as knees, vertebral discs, shoulder, and hips.
  5. Regulates body temperature

The standard recommendation for water intake per day is about 2 liters or 8 glasses of fluid.  Water intake can vary depending on your health challenges or activity level.  Water can come from a multitude of beverages, but the best source is good old-fashioned H2O.  Get yourself a large stainless steel water bottle and carry it with you everywhere.  You’ll thank yourself later.

New Hope, MN Chiropractor Discusses Importance of Omega 3 Fish Oils

Other than a good multi-vitamin, I feel the most important supplement to recommend to patients is Omega 3 fatty acids.  Omega 3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids that your body needs to function properly.  We do not get nearly enough in our American diet.  You get Omega 3’s most commonly from fatty fish, such as salmon, or from flax seeds.  Most people do not eat enough fish or flax to get enough Omega 3’s in their diet, so by far the best and easiest way to get it into your diet is by taking a quality highly concentrated fish oil supplement.  I usually recommend 700-1000 mg of combined EPA/DHA per day for most patients.

Omega 3’s or fish oil supplements have many benefits to the human body.  Some of the more important ones are to decrease inflammation, promote a healthy heart, skin, and hair, and to maintain cognitive function.  If you haven’t considered taking Omega 3’s as part of your daily routine, talk to a trusted healthcare professional about what options they would recommend.
